I think that lighting designers are becoming more and more important because of the new eco-friendly lightbulbs which people are being encouraged (required?) to use nowadays. They cast such an awful, yellow/green light which makes one look ill and feel so dreary that interior designers need to come up with good lighting schemes to counter this effect.

That is a good article. i’ve often wondered how what I now know is called “green” lighting worked.

I have never been able to quite figure out what makes certain lights better or different from the rest. And to me the price of lighting in the future is going to matter. All these new types of lights can’t be super expensive or it doesn’t seem like its going to work.

A list of renown lighting designers isn’t exactly available, however if you head to the IES website, you can look at Lumen Award winners over the year. These designers are honored by their peers for submitted projects in given categories. It’s a good place to start.

Good post. I wish James would have discussed cost more. Manufacturers are not just racing to create the most efficient light source, but the most efficient source that is reasonably priced. Incandescent bulbs are still far and away the most cost effective light source (except, perhaps, natural light), and, unlike many other purchases, saving money does not necessarily meaning inferior quality – inexpensive bulbs can provide a constant light with a very nice hue. What is happening on the cost front? Is the hope that costs will drastically drop when incandescents are banned?
