Musings: Moving or Going into a New Service Area, There is More to It Than Just…

For this week’s Guest Post Friday here at Construction Law Musings, we would like to welcome back (again) Sean Lintow Sr. (@The_HTRC) Sean has over 20 years in the construction and project management fields. As many know he pulled up stakes and moved to the State of Illinois almost a year ago where he still focuses on the “green” / energy efficiency markets by helping builders & trade professionals to improve their methods not only locally but nationally. Currently he is RESNET Rater, AEE CEA (Certified Energy Auditor), ENERGY STAR partner & verifier, EPA Indoor airPLUS verifier, Level 2 Infrared Thermographer, Volunteer Energy Rater for Habitat for Humanity, and Builders Challenge Partner & Verifier.

I would like to thank Chris for inviting me back as a guest poster. One item that struck a bell with me lately was his recent post for contractors considering work in another state is to check that states contractor licensing laws. Part of me was just saying – ahh if it were just that simple… With that in mind, here are some additional thoughts of mine along with advice picked up and given to others considering a move to greener pastures in another state, another town or maybe even taking that sweet little project outside of your current area that seems too good to pass up. Lucky 13! Thirteen Years as a Solo Construction Attorney

I have always found it appropriate that my jump to solo practice and Independence Day are so close in time.  Today marks 13 years since my first day as a solo practitioner of construction law at The Law Office of Christopher G. Hill, PC.  Time sure has flown by thanks to the great clients and friends that followed me to solo practice and whom I have met since the firm’s founding on July 1, 2010.  I also could not have made the transition and had the fun and success over the past 13 years without the support of the best wife and family that any construction lawyer could want.

Since the firm’s last anniversary, my youngest child (who was 7 when this journey began!) started and completed her sophomore year at N. C. State University, my second oldest is a successful car salesman in Boone, NC and my oldest has bought a home, adopted an adorable golden retriever puppy, and celebrated her second marriage anniversary.  The first half of 2023 has at least been more normal, meaning lots of construction law representation and a new case or two, along with a few tweaks to the construction law statutory landscape.  I have also continued to grow my ADR practice, including arbitration and mediation.

Professionally, I’ve had a great year.  I am serving as the Secretary of the Section Council of the Virginia Bar Association Construction and Public Contracts Law section.  I was also honored to be nominated and elected to the Virginia Legal Elite in Construction Law for the 16th straight year and to the Virginia Super Lawyers in Construction Litigation for the 7th year running.  I also continued to have the opportunity to teach in various construction-related venues on relevant topics and to help out some of the best clients around.

All in all the 13th year as a solo construction attorney has been as good as I could have hoped.  Thank you again to the clients, friends, and particularly family that have made the last 13 years of solo practice fulfilling and fun.

Why I “Muse” Every Week

Originally posted 2012-02-20 09:00:43.

Recently, I’ve gotten numerous questions/comments from friends, clients and potential clients regarding how and why I continue to blog here at Construction Law Musings.  My first answer is always that its fun.  I know, it seems like a bit more work on top of a busy solo construction law practice.  However, it is exactly because of my busy practice that publishing this construction law blog has been a great thing.

In December of last year, this corner of the Web turned 3 (something that still amazes me).  When I began writing for this blog, I had no idea how much work, learning and fun would come out of it.  Sure, there is some marketing value to a blog and the use of other Web 2.0 and social media tools for client development and networking with other lawyers and construction pros.  However, if publishing this blog and posting on a regular basis weren’t fun and interesting (and I thank all of you who read and post here at Musings for making this experience all the richer), this blog would never have made it past the first year.

Thank You for Seven Years of Election to Super Lawyers

It is with humility and a sense of accomplishment that I announce that I have been selected for the seventh straight year to the Virginia Super Lawyers in the Construction Litigation category for 2023.  Add this to my recent election to the Virginia Legal Elite in Construction and I’ve had a pretty good year.  As always, I am thrilled to be included on these peer-elected lists.

So without further ado, thank you to my peers and those on the panel at Virginia Super Lawyers for the great honor. I feel quite proud to be part of the 5% of Virginia attorneys that made this list for 2023.

The full lists of Virginia Super Lawyers will appear in the May edition of Richmond Magazine. Please check it out.

If you want to see the lists before then, a digital version of the Virginia Super Lawyers Magazine is available here.

Thanks again to all of you who participated in my nomination and election.
