Fun and Learning at the 39th Annual Construction Law and Public Contracts Seminar

construction photoOn November 2nd and 3rd, construction attorneys from Virginia and surrounding jurisdictions gathered in Charlottesville for the 39th Annual Construction and Public Contracts seminar co-hosted by the Virginia State Bar’s Construction Law and Public Contracts Section and Virginia CLE.  This was also the first year in a while where I was not a member of the board of governors for the Construction section.

As always, the event was a great time for learning, networking and catching up with old and new friends (and not just because I was speaking!).  Topics ranged from the esoteric (wine and the law), to the relatively mundane (the administrative process) and from the always timely (mechanic’s liens) to some topics that I knew less about (Pass-Through claims).  All of the speakers did a great job and as always, I learned something new and brushed up on topic that I thought I knew all about.

The breaks in the action and the various other chances to network provided the conference with something aside from 12 hours of CLE (yes, all 12).  It is in these breaks and at the cocktail hours/dinner where even more of the value of the conference showed itself.  Not only did I get a chance to hang out with some of the great friends I’d met at the Boar’s Head over the years, but I got a chance to “noodle” out issues that I’d run into and plumb the minds of some of the best construction lawyers in Virginia.  I met some new colleagues that I hope become friends as well.  To those friends that I didn’t get a chance to speak with, I’m sorry I missed you.  To those new friends I met, I enjoyed the chat.

As you can see from the numerous posts about this seminar here at Musings, I am a big fan.  Next year’s seminar is November 1 and 2, 2019 so if you are a construction attorney that practices in Virginia, I recommend that you mark your calendar, get your hotel reservation and join us.

As always, I welcome your comments below.  Please subscribe to keep up with this and other Construction Law Musings.
