I didn’t post about the Construction Law and Public Contracts Seminar last year, mainly because it was online and I had serious Zoom fatigue (it was virtual due to COVID) so aside from the mechanic’s lien portion that I taught along with a friend and one other session, I did not attend.
This year however was a wonderful, if somewhat less attended due to a number limitation imposed for COVID safety, in-person seminar. The speakers for the 12 hours of CLE (including that sometimes elusive 2 hours of ethics credit) were knowledgeable and provided great insight into topics ranging from DPOR Board of Contractors licensing enforcement to changes in Virginia employment law to a great segment on settlement checklists. Most importantly, we were able to talk in person this year as opposed to last do all could take advantage of the “non-educational” parts of the conference (namely networking and rekindling friendships).
If you are a Virginia (or even a Maryland or DC) construction attorney, I highly recommend that you attend this event every year if you can and last weekend was no exception. I always enjoy the time spent with colleagues and friends at the Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville, Virginia. I also meet at least one or two folks I didn’t know or had only spoken to by phone (this was particularly true after 2020). Talking with those at the seminar always reminds me that I’m lucky to practice in the field that I do because of the skill and collegiality of the construction bar here in Virginia. If you didn’t attend this year (or even if you did), be sure to save the date for next year’s seminar on November 4 and 5, 2022.
Without further ado, thanks to all of those that took the time to speak with me. I always enjoy catching up with old friends and especially making new ones.
