If you are a Virginia (or even a Maryland or DC) construction attorney, you should know of and attend the Virginia State Bar’s Construction and Public Contracts Law seminar every year. This past November 1st and 2nd was no exception. I always enjoy the time spent with colleagues and friends at the Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville, Virginia. I also meet at least one or two folks I didn’t know or had only spoken to by phone. Talking with those at the seminar always reminds me that I’m lucky to practice in the field that I do because of the skill and collegiality of the construction bar here in Virginia.
Not only did this latest seminar involve great speakers on wide ranging topics from mediation ethics, to expert disclosures, ICE enforcement at the job site and construction damages (making up the “full boat” of CLE for the 2019-20 year), it also marked the 40th year of this seminar. While I have now attended a bit over a fourth of these seminars, several of the attendees were founding members of the Construction and Public Contracts Law Section that started this annual tradition. Bending the ear of these long time practitioners of construction law is always a treat.
All in all it was a great time as it has been for the 12 years I have attended the conference. To those who attended, be sure to attend again on November 6 and 7, 2020. To those construction lawyers in Virginia (or even those that are just interested in learning a think or two) that did not attend, I highly recommend that you attend next year.
Without further ado, thanks to all of those that took the time to speak with me. I always enjoy catching up with old friends and especially making new ones.
