Thoughts on construction law from Christopher G. Hill, Virginia construction lawyer, LEED AP, mediator, and member of the Virginia Legal Elite in Construction Law

Solo Practice University! Wow!

Solo Practice University! Wow!When Susan Liebel, the founder of Solo Practice University contacted me to talk about her vision and my joining the faculty, I was of course familiar with SPU and had kept up with faculty announcements (please check out the faculty, they are amazing!) , but had no idea that I was even on the radar here at Musings. The possibility of joining this elite group had, frankly, never occurred to me.

Susan and I talked a bit and I was sold. SPU is a great idea at a great time. Law schools keep putting out students who “think like lawyers” but don’t know the nuts and bolts of law practice.

I am not excluded from this group. When I first got out of law school almost 12 years ago, and into the Virginia Attorney General’s Office, I was given an office and two file cabinets full of files and told to get going. I, of course, had no idea even where the courthouse was, much less how to draft a demurrer (that is Virginian for Motion to Dismiss). I am very grateful to the lawyers that took the time to teach me these practical ways to share my knowledge.

By joining the faculty, I hope to help out attorneys who want to get into construction law. I want to do this from a practical risk management perspective. My hope is that by sharing some of the things that I have learned over the course of my career, I can help out young lawyers in the way that others have helped me.

I will start classes sometime in June because of present time commitments but look forward to helping out at SPU.
